Across Canada Roadtrip, Ontario

Lake Superior

This May I had a wonderful opportunity to help my friend Sarah drive across Canada with her 2 daughters (both under 4). Sarah needed a hand moving from PEI to Red Deer Alberta and offered to pick me up on her way through New Brunswick. How could I pass up the special opportunity to help a friend and see our big and beautiful Canadian provinces. So since this was my first time seeing west of Ontario, I thought why not continue the journey past Alberta and make plans to travel solo to Vancouver.

We left the Maritimes at the end of April, during a very unseasonably chilly spring. We will soon find out that Canada in general had an unusually late start to spring, even Alberta still had hints of snow! This is my epic 20 day roadtrip across Canada, from east coast to west!

Ontario, April 30 – May 4, 2014

We stopped in Ottawa to visit and stay with Sarah’s good friend Amy for the night. Before we leave the Ottawa area, we enjoy a delicious breakfast with Sarah’s friend Jennifer at Cora’s. Yumm!

Next stop is the town of Sudbury Ontario where we stop for the night at the Days Inn. The girls were great little roadtrippers and they loved going for a swim at the hotel pool and warming up in the sauna. The hotel also had a great little gastro pub where we enjoyed beers and tasty burgers while listening to some live music. A great way to cap off a long day.

From Sudbury we made our way to Sault Ste Marie. While enroute we made another stop to visit with Sarah’s friend Don from the Mississauga First Nation reserve in Blind River. We were all treated to a fantastic lunch at Pier Seventeen restaurant overlooking the water.

When we arrived to Sault Ste. Marie we stopped to meet up with Sarah’s friend Kelly at her cafe, Cafe Natura. We were treated to some awesome fruit smoothies before heading over to her house for a rest.

We started the next day with breakfast at Kelly’s cafe before hitting the road to Thunder Bay. The drive was very scenic along Lake Superior and we finally got to enjoy a brief moment of sunshine.

For lunch we stopped in White River for a bite to eat and to let the kids have some fun on at the playground.

By late evening we pulled into the Best Western Plus at Thunder Bay. The kids were exhausted and half asleep so Sarah stayed in the room and ordered room service as I ventured to the lounge for a late dinner and a drink.

The next morning we packed up our things a drove the last leg through the HUGE (endless) province of Ontario. We were happy to finally make it to Manitoba and stopped at the Travel Lodge in Winnipeg.
